As the winter chill sets in, so do sniffles, coughs, and the occasional “stay-home” days. At Fundamentals Early Learning Centre, we know how important it is to support children’s health and wellbeing, especially through the colder months. With a few simple strategies, we can help strengthen immunity, build healthy habits, and keep our little ones feeling their best all season long.
Here are our top winter wellness tips for your family:
1. Practice Good Hygiene
Hygiene habits start early and are best formed through consistent daily routines.
We encourage:
- Frequent hand washing with soap and water – especially after toileting, outdoor play, and before meals
- Coughing and sneezing into elbows
- Using tissues once and then throwing them away
- Minimising the sharing of water bottles, dummies, hats, or utensils
At our centre, we model these practices in fun, child-friendly ways like songs, games, and group reminders.
2. Boost Immunity with Nutritious Foods
A healthy immune system begins with what we eat.
Winter is the perfect time to fuel children’s growing bodies with:
- Fresh fruit and vegetables, especially those rich in Vitamin C (oranges, berries, tomatoes, broccoli)
- Wholegrains and lean proteins
- Iron-rich foods like spinach and legumes
- Probiotic-rich options like yoghurt to support gut health

3. Prioritise Rest and Sleep
Sleep is critical to overall health, growth, and immunity.
Did you know recommended daily sleep requirements are:
- 0–2 years: 12–16 hours (including naps)
- 2–3 years: 11–14 hours
- 3–5 years: 10–13 hours
Children under the age of 6 should always be given opportunities for sleep and rest throughout the day. Whether that’s a nap, a quiet space, or simple downtime, it allows the body and mind to recharge – essential for concentration, learning, and wellness.
4. Dress for the Weather
Winter layering keeps children comfortable and protected against temperature changes.
Tips:
- Use layers that are easy to remove as children warm up during play
- Pack beanies, gloves, scarves, and waterproof jackets for outdoor adventures
- Always include a spare warm outfit in your child’s bag – just in case!
We encourage daily outdoor play (weather permitting), so dressing appropriately is key to staying healthy.
5. Keep Them Home When Unwell
We know it’s not always easy – but when your child is sick, rest is best.
Please keep them home if they show signs of:
- Fever, vomiting, diarrhoea
- Rashes or conjunctivitis
- Persistent coughs, sore throats, or lethargy
This helps with quicker recovery and prevents the spread of illness within our centre community.
6. Fresh Air and Sunshine Still Matter
Even in winter, fresh air and outdoor play remain vital for your child’s health and development.
Benefits include:
- Boosting Vitamin D levels, essential for strong bones and immune function
- Enhancing mood and energy, helping to reduce feelings of sluggishness or restlessness
- Supporting physical development through gross motor movement and active play
- Reducing indoor germ circulation, helping to limit the spread of illness
At Fundamentals Early Learning Centre, we ensure children continue to engage in outdoor experiences daily (weather permitting), rugged up in warm layers and supported with age-appropriate activities that encourage exploration and movement.
Tip for families: Even a short walk, backyard play, or visit to the park can make a big difference. Try a simple winter scavenger hunt, collecting leaves, counting birds, or observing the colour of the sky — all while staying active and connected to nature.
7. Care for Emotional Wellbeing
The cold weather, darker evenings, and changes to routines can affect children’s moods. Support their emotional wellness by:
- Maintaining predictable routines
- Creating connection through stories, cuddles, and one-on-one time
- Talking about feelings and offering comfort during changes
- Encouraging simple mindfulness moments, even at a young age
At Fundamentals Early Learning Centre, we believe wellbeing is holistic – supporting your child physically, emotionally, and socially. Together, we can help them grow strong, happy, and resilient – no matter the season.
Let’s keep our Fundamentals family thriving through winter – warm, well, and full of wonder.
